To Be Honest by Maggie Ann Martin

I had seen a couple positive reviews for To Be Honest floating around instagram, so I picked it up and finally read it! The cover color (my favorite teal) definitely helped convince me that I needed this book, and I’m so glad I read it.

To Be Honest stars Savannah, a plus size lady who’s big sister (and best friend) just left for college. Now she has to deal with the struggles of senior year, a weight obsessed mom, tutoring calculus, and writing a groundbreaking news article on her own. Knowing how insane my senior year was without those things, I don’t know how the heck Savvy handles it.

There’s also a bit of romance in here, which is done wonderfully. As someone who has struggled with weight, reading Savvy’s stressors and worries was comforting; it’s always nice to know that it aren’t alone in your feelings, even if it’s a book character. She worries about people not being attracted to her because of her weight, along with other simple things, like shopping for a homecoming dress. It’s relatable, and it touches on the ways that can intensify anxiety.

I absolutely adored this book, because it shows that people with fat are just people, and they deal with literally the same things as folks of other sizes. It was a wonderful comfort read, and I can’t recommend it enough. My compliments to Ms Martin – I can’t wait to read your other books!
